Abstract A photographic element comprising a support having thereon at least one layer containing a polymeric mordant containing a repeating unit represented by the general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, each represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R 3 and R 4 , which may be the same or different, each represents a methyl group or an ethyl group; Y represents a halogen atom, a nitro group, a cyano group, a methoxy group, a methoxycarbonyl group or an ethylthio group; and X⊖ represents an anion.
