Abstract

Abstract The invention provides methods and apparatus for the production of Mg and Ca through a carbon reduction of their oxides, wherein Mg (or Ca) and CO co-existing in the mixed gas produced from said carbon reduction are kept safe from their reaction into MgO (or CaO) and C throughout the whole process until they are effectively separated for collection.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 134 words
A method of obtaining a metal selected from the group consisting of Mg, Be, Sr, Ba and Ca through a carbon reduction of their oxides at elevated temperatures, which comprises: (a) introducing a mixed gas consisting of said metal and CO produced from said carbon reduction into a divergent nozzle operated under the condition of underexpansion, under thermal control not to allow said constituent gases to react with each other; (b) ejecting said mixed gas through said divergent nozzle, and enabling said mixed gas to adiabatically expand at a speed exceeding the molecular motion speeds of said constituent gases, thereby causing said mixed gas to cool down instantaneously to temperatures at which said constituent gases cannot react with each other; (c) separating said mixed gas into said metal and CO and collecting said metal.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 70 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the ejection of said mixed gas through said divergent nozzle is directed to a separator screen located spacedly from said nozzle exit and within the maximum deflection angle of said CO, thereby enabling a greater part of said CO to pass outside said separator screen and enabling said metal and a small portion of said CO to gather within said separator screen.
Claim 4
Independent Claim 150 words
A method of obtaining a metal selected from the group consisting of Be, Sr, Ba, Mg and Ca through a carbon reduction of their oxides at elevated temperatures, which comprises: (a) introducing a mixed gas consisting of said metal and CO produced from said carbon reduction into a divergent nozzle operated under the condition of underexpansion, under thermal control not to allow said constituent gases to react with each other; (b) ejecting said mixed gas through said divergent nozzle, and enabling said mixed gas to adiabatically expand at a speed exceeding the molecular motion speeds of said constituent gases, thereby causing said mixed gas to cool down instantaneously to temperatures at which said constituent gases cannot react with each other; (c) separating said mixed gas into said metal and CO to collect said metal; (d) placing said metal in a melting furnace to obtain the same in its molten form.
Claim 5
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 45 words
A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the ejection of said mixed gas through said divergent nozzle is directed to a collecting means whose collector surface is movable with respect to said nozzle exit, thereby collecting said metal thereon in its aggregate, powder form.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 43 words
A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein the collected metal on the collector is solidified into a strip form thereon; said metal strip being moved away from said nozzle together with said collector surface for separating the metal from said collector surface.
