Abstract

Abstract A closure for a pipe or pressure vessel comprises a door adapted to fit into an aperture in a pipe or pressure vessel and an arcuate locking member disposed around the periphery of the door for locking the door to the pipe or pressure vessel, the ends of the locking member being movable towards and away from each other to cause radial expansion and contraction of the locking member, whereby the locking member is brought into and out of locking engagement with the pipe or pressure vessel. A seal for the closure comprises a rigid, usually annular, support having first and second flanges for engaging respective opposed faces on the closure and the pipe or pressure vessel, the first flange having a greater surface area and being less flexible than the second flange, and a flexible lining carried by the support and extending beyond the terminal edges of the flanges.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 17
Claim 1
Independent Claim 158 words
A closure for a pipe or pressure vessel comprising a door adapted to fit into an aperture in a pipe or pressure vessel, an arcuate locking member disposed around the periphery of the door for locking the door to the pipe or pressure vessel, means for moving the ends of the locking member away from and towards each other to cause radial expansion and contraction of the locking member, whereby the locking member may be brought into and out of locking engagement with the pipe or pressure vessel, and a hinge assembly by means of which the door may be mounted on the pipe or pressure vessel, said hinge assembly comprising a main bracket adapted to be secured to the pipe or pressure vessel, a secondary bracket pivotally mounted on the main bracket and a support for the door mounted on the secondary bracket for movement about an axis parallel to the pivot axis of the secondary bracket.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 158 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 33 words
A closure according to claim 1 wherein the locking member comprises a generally annular body provided with at least one radial recess which facilitates the radial expansion and contraction of the locking member.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
A closure according to claim 2 wherein each recess comprises a slot which terminates at an axial bore in the locking member.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words
A closure according to claim 1 wherein the locking member comprises a plurality of segmental blocks mounted on C-shaped rings.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 45 words
A closure according to claim 1 wherein the peripheral surface of the locking member includes at least one peripheral rib one surface of which forms a bearing surface adapted to engage with a corresponding bearing surface in the walls of the pipe or pressure vessel.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 37 words
A closure according to claim 5 wherein the peripheral surface of the locking member includes a plurality of the said ribs, spaced axially from each other, the maximum diameters of the ribs decreasing in the axial direction.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 24 words
A closure according to claim 5 wherein the bearing surface of the rib lies at right angles to the axis of the locking member.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 27 words
A closure according to claim 1 further including a segmental block adapted to fit between the ends of the locking member when the locking member is expanded.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 72 words
A closure according to claim 1 wherein the means for moving the ends of the locking member towards and away from each other comprises two levers pivotally mounted on the door, one end of each lever engaging with a respective end of the locking member, the other ends of each lever being mounted for movement towards and away from each other in a double ended lead screw rotatably mounted on the closure.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 23 words
A closure according to claim 1 wherein the means for moving the ends of the locking member is removably mounted on the door.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 33 words
A closure according to claim 1 wherein the means for moving the ends of the locking member is housed in a recess in the closure closed by a cover mounted on the closure.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 18 words
A closure according to claim 1 wherein the support for the door is releasably connected to the door.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 70 words
An access port for a pipe or pressure vessel comprising a body portion secured or adapted to be secured within the walls of the pipe or pressure vessel, and a closure according to claim 1 mounted in an aperture in the body portion, the body portion defining a bearing face around the periphery of the aperture against which the locking member abuts when the closure is locked in the aperture.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 23 words
An access port according to claim 13 further comprising a seal located between two opposed faces on the closure and body portion respectively.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 94 words
