A transparent liquid shampoo composition, consisting essentially of A. from about 10 to about 40 weight percent of an anionic surfactant having the formula R.sub.1 --O--(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n SO.sub.3 M wherein R 1 is alkyl having from 10 to 18 carbon atoms, n is the average number of added ethylene oxide units and is in the range of from one to 5, with the proviso that compound in which n equals zero is from zero to 5 weight percent of the total weight of component A, and M is an alkali metal or an alkanolamine selected from the group consisting of mono-, di- and triethanolamine, B. from about 0.1 to about 5 weight percent of cationic surfactant having the formula ##STR9## wherein R 2 is alkyl having 16 to 22 carbon atoms, R 3 and R 4 are methyl or ethyl, R 5 is methyl, ethyl or benzyl, and X is chloro, bromo, iodo or monoethylsulfate, and C. the balance is essentially water.
