A method of solid state preparation of a lead-rich pyrochlore compound of the ruthenate and/or iridate type, having the formula: Pb.sub.2 [M.sub.2-x Pb.sub.x ]O.sub.7-y wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Ru, Ir and mixtures thereof, wherein x is greater than 0 and less than or equal to about 1.2, and wherein y is greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to about 1.0, comprising: (a) blending a mixture of a powdered lead source and a powdered metal source selected from the group consisting of ruthenium sources, iridium sources and mixtures thereof, so as to obtain a reactant mixture having a lead to metal molar ratio of at least about 1.0:1.0; and (b) reacting said mixture at an elevated temperature below about 600° C in an oxygen-containing environment for a period of time sufficient to permit some reaction to occur.

A method of solid state preparation of a lead-rich pyrochlore compound of the ruthenate and/or iridate type, having the formula: Pb.sub.2 [M.sub.2-x Pb.sub.x ]O.sub.7-y wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Ru, Ir and mixtures thereof, wherein x is greater than 0 and less than or equal to about 1.2, and wherein y is greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to about 1.0, comprising: (a) blending a mixture of a powdered lead source and a powdered metal source selected from the group consisting of ruthenium sources, iridium sources and mixtures thereof, so as to obtain a reactant mixture having a lead to metal molar ratio of at least about 1.0:1.0; and (b) reacting said mixture at an elevated temperature below about 600° C in an oxygen-containing environment for a period of time sufficient to permit some reaction to occur.
