A photosensitive silver halide emulsion wherein the silver halide grains have adsorbed on their surface a substantially continuous layer of an emulsion peptizer consisting essentially of a water soluble film-forming polymeric silver halide grain-growing protective colloid having in its structure at least about 0.5 mole percent repeating units of the formula: ##STR5## wherein R 1 is hydrogen, a lower alkyl group or a halogen; R 2 is hydrogen, a lower alkyl group, halogen or cyano group; and R 3 is a 1 to 6 carbon alkylene group or a 3 to 6 carbon cycloalkylene group.
