Claim 1
Independent Claim
195 words
In a heat exchanger tube and shell structure, a generally flat plate having a plurality of individual tube receiving apertures formed therein, at least three members, integral with said plate defining said apertures said integral members protruding inwardly toward the center of said respective apertures wherein the improvement comprises, the inwardmost end of each of said members terminating on an arc that defines a circle having a diameter which is slightly greater than the outside diameter of the individual tube that is to be received within said respective apertures, said members further forming bights between at least adjacent pairs of said members in order to provide a predetermined flow area when the tube that is individual to the respective aperture is lodged in place said inwardly extending members have sides that establish the deepest portions of said bights formed between adjacent member pairs, said deepest bight portions each defining a circle that has a larger diameter than the circle defined by said inwardmost member ends and said deepest bight portions being located on a circle having a center that substantially coincides with the center of said circle that is defined by said inwardmost member ends.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
235 words
A heat exchanger comprising a pressure shell having a longitudinal axis, an upper tube sheet transverse to said shell axis, a lower tube sheet transverse to said shell axis, a plurality of heat exchanger tubes within said pressure shell extending between said tube sheets, a plurality of plates transverse to said shell axis, each pair of said plates being spaced at substantially equal distances from adjacent pairs of said plates and from said tube sheets where said tube sheets each are adjacent to one of said plates said plates having apertures formed therein to receive at least some of said heat exchanger tubes, each of said tube receiving apertures having at least three inwardly protruding members integral with siaid plates to restrain said respective tube, the inwardmost ends of said members terminating in arcs that define a circle having a diameter that is slightly greater than the outside diameter of said respective tube further forming bights between adjacent pairs of said members in order to provide a predetermined flow area when the tube that is individual to the respective aperture is lodged in place, said respective tube engaging at least one of said inwardly protruding members of said plurality of plate members in line contact, and establishing a gap between at least another of said inwardly protruding members and an adjacent outer portion of said respective tube to prevent crevice corrosion in the heat exchanger.
