Abstract

Abstract A heterogeneous catalytic process for producing hydroxylated hydrocarbons containing from 1-2 carbon atoms which comprises: contacting a synthesis gas containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen with a catalyst consisting essentially of palladium at reaction conditions such that hydroxylated compounds are selectively produced while substantially avoiding the concomitant formation of methane or higher molecular weight hydrocarbons.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 106 words
A heterogeneous catalytic process for selectively producing hydroxylated hydrocarbons containing from 1-2 carbon atoms from a gaseous mixture containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen which comprises contacting said gaseous mixture with a catalyst consisting essentially of palladium at a reaction temperature of from about 200° C. to about 400° C. and a reaction pressure of from about 150 to about 20,000 psia, the reaction pressure being correspondingly increased as reaction temperature is increased such that hydroxylated organic compounds are selectively produced in quantities greater than about 90%, by weight, of the total product mixture while substantially avoiding the concomitant formation of methane or higher molecular weight hydrocarbons.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 106 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 31 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the temperature of the reaction is from about 260° to about 350° C. and the reaction pressure is from about 150 to about 3,000 psia.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 14 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said palladium catalyst is supported on silica gel.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 27 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the palladium concentration on the catalyst support is in the range of from about 2-5%, by weight, of the catalyst support.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said synthesis gas is present in a ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide of from about 1:1 to 5:1.
