Abstract

Abstract An improved method and apparatus employing at least one immobilized liquid membrane separated from a liquid sweep by a gas-permeable barrier for removing a gaseous component from a gaseous mixture. The improvements include use of one or more liquid-filled passages extending through the gas-permeable barrier to effect diffusive transfer of active carrier species from the liquid sweep into the membrane, thereby maintaining the separation efficiency of each membrane. In a preferred embodiment, the improvements are applied to removal of hydrogen sulfide from mixtures thereof with carbon dioxide as found in gasified coal.

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 206 words
In an apparatus for removing a gaseous component from a gaseous mixture, comprising: a first immobilized liquid membrane containing in the liquid thereof at least one species which is reversibly chemically reactive with said gaseous component; impervious to said liquid, said barrier being disposed with a first surface thereof in opposing relationship with a first surface of said immobilized liquid membrane; means for contacting said gaseous mixture with a second surface of said immobilized liquid membrane; and means for conducting a flow of sweep liquid along the opposite surface of said gas-permeable barrier to absorb gases emerging from said barrier; the improvement for substantially maintaining the separation efficiency of said membrane, comprising said first barrier having at least one discrete passage extending from said first to said opposite surface thereof, said passage being of a size effective for receiving said sweep liquid therein at pressures below the pressure at which the substantially liquid-impervious character of said barrier is overcome in the region of the barrier other than said passage such that said sweep liquid communicates with said membrane through the passage, whereby an amount of said reactive species contained in said sweep liquid is transferred therefrom through said passage into the liquid immobilized in said membrane.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 206 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 32 words
The improvement of claim 1, wherein said barrier is microporous and substantially non-wettable by said liquid, said pressure being the initiation pressure of the material of which said microporous barrier is comprised.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 23 words
The improvement of claim 1, wherein said first surface of said barrier is in intimate contact with said first surface of said membrane.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
The improvement of claim 1, wherein said barrier has a plurality of spaced apart passages, each passage extending from said first to said second surface thereof.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 19 words
The improvement of claim 4, wherein the diameter of each passage is from about 0.1 to about 5000 microns.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 30 words
The improvement of claim 4, wherein the combined transverse area of said passages is from about 0.001 to about 20 percent of the area of one surface of said barrier.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 26 words
The improvement of claim 4 wherein the passage number density is from about 0.1 to about 500 passages per square inch of said first barrier surface.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 164 words
The improvement of claim 1, further including: (a) a second immobilized liquid membrane containing in the liquid thereof an amount of said species, said second membrane being disposed between said first membrane and said first barrier, with a first surface of said second membrane being in contact with said first surface of said first barrier; (b) a second gas-permeable barrier which is substantially impervious to said liquid, said second barrier being disposed between said first and said second membranes, with a first surface of said second barrier being in contact with said first surface of said first membrane and a second surface of said second barrier being in contact with a second surface of said second membrane; (c) said second barrier having at least one discrete passage extending from said first to said second surface thereof, said last-mentioned passage being of a size effective for receiving therein liquid forced out of said second membrane by application of sweep liquid pressure against said first membrane.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 18 words
The improvement of claim 8, wherein each of said barriers is microporous and substantially non-wettable by said liquid.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 17 words
The improvement of claim 8 wherein each of said barriers has a plurality of passages extending therethrough.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 22 words
The improvement of claim 10 wherein the diameter of each passage through said barriers is from about 0.1 to about 5000 microns.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 59 words
The improvement of claim 10 wherein the combined transverse area of the passages through said first barrier is from about 0.001 to about 20 percent of the area of one surface thereof and the combined transverse area of the passages through said second barrier is from about 0.001 to about 20 percent of the area of one surface thereof.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 31 words
The improvement of claim 10, wherein the passage number density for each barrier is from about 0.1 to about 500 passages per square inch of one surface of the respective barrier.
