Claim 1
Independent Claim
84 words
The method of returning hot geothermal brine from a geothermal brine production well back into the ground, which comprises the steps of: flowing said brine through a long, open ditch proximate the surface of the ground, lowering the temperature of said brine in said ditch so as to cause precipitation of minerals out of the brine in said ditch and thereby reduce the mineral concentration in said brine, and reinjecting said brine of reduced mineral concentration back into the ground through a reinjection well.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
84 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
17 words
The method of claim 1, which comprises the further step of trapping precipitated minerals in said ditch.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
23 words
The method of claim 2, wherein precipitated minerals are trapped at a plurality of separate locations spaced along the length of said ditch.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
28 words
The method of claim 1, which comprises the further step of passing said brine of reduced mineral concentration through a sump before reinjecting it back into the ground.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
12 words
The method of claim 1, wherein said ditch is a concrete ditch.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
28 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the mineral concentration of said brine was increased before the brine was flowed through said ditch by flashing steam from said brine.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
15 words
The method of claim 1, wherein said ditch is at least about 1/2 mile long.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
15 words
The method of claim 1, wherein said ditch is at least about 1 mile long.
Claim 10
Independent Claim
177 words
A system for generating electrical power from geothermal energy, which comprises: a well providing access to an underground source of high temperature brine, power apparatus located proximate the surface of the ground, said power apparatus having input means connected to said well for receiving brine from said well and having output means for the outflow of used brine after heat energy has been extracted therefrom, said power apparatus being adapted to convert thermal energy from said brine into electrical power, injection well means spaced from said high temperature well, and return conduit means from said output means to said injection well means for returning said used brine back into the underground system, said return conduit means comprising a long, open ditch proximate the surface of the ground, said ditch exposing a substantial surface area of said used brine to the atmosphere for lowering the temperature of said used brine as it flows through said ditch so as to cause precipitation of minerals out of said used brine and thereby reduce the mineral content of said used brine.
