Abstract

Abstract A heat-transporting fluid F is passed over a material C having a high latent heat of fusion and in direct contact therewith so that the fluid and the material exchange heat at a temperature close to the melting point of the material. By contacting the hot fluid F with the material C, this material melts and accumulates heat in the form of latent heat of fusion while cooling the fluid F. When the cold fluid is contacted directly with the material C, this material solidifies and releases heat which is transmitted to the fluid F.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 158 words
A thermal accumulator having a high latent heat of fusion, wherein the accumulator comprises: means for storing a material C having a high latent heat of fusion; and means for circulating a heat-transporting fluid F so that the fluid F and the material C are in direct contact and exchange heat, the heat exchange being carried out essentially at a temperature close to the melting point of the material C, the means for storing including a leak-tight vessel containing a series of trays arranged in tiered stages, the trays containing the material C, the fluid F flowing about said trays in contact with a free surfaces of the material C, each of the trays including a horizontal capillary attached to its associated tray and located at the associated free surface of the material C, the material C and the heat trnasporting fluid F having substantially different densities and surface tensions at the melting point of the material C.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 158 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 51 words
A thermal accumulator according to claim 1, wherein the capillary structure is a horizontal wire-fabric element placed in such a manner as to ensure that the surface of the wire-fabric element coincides with the interface between the material C and fluid F when the material C is in a liquid state.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 53 words
A thermal accumulator according to claim 1, wherein the capillary structure is a horizontal sintered metal plate having open capillarity and placed in such a manner as to ensure that the plate coincides with the interface between the material C and the fluid F when the material C is in a liquid state.
