Claim 1
Independent Claim 46 words
A composition suitable for use as a shell process foundry flake resin comprising a blend of a phenol-formaldehyde novolak containing 0.70 to 0.83 moles of formaldehyde per mole of phenol and 1 to 20% of an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer resin based on the phenol in the novolak.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 46 words
A composition suitable for use as a shell process foundry flake resin comprising a blend of a phenol-formaldehyde novolak containing 0.70 to 0.83 moles of formaldehyde per mole of phenol and 1 to 20% of an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer resin based on the phenol in the novolak.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
A composition according to claim 1, wherein the terpolymer is 1 to 10% of the phenol in the novolak.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 20 words
A composition according to claim 2, wherein the amount of formaldehyde is 0.72 to 0.80 mole per mole of phenol.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 9 words
A composition according to claim 2 including salicylic acid.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 9 words
A composition according to claim 4 including calcium stearate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 60 words
A process of preparing a composition suitable for coating foundry sand comprising forming a novolak from phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst, adding an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer resin in an amount of 1 to 10% of the phenol prior to the completion of the formation of the novolak and adding salicylic acid after formation of the novolak.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 60 words
A process of preparing a composition suitable for coating foundry sand comprising forming a novolak from phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst, adding an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer resin in an amount of 1 to 10% of the phenol prior to the completion of the formation of the novolak and adding salicylic acid after formation of the novolak.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 18 words
A process according to claim 6 including the step of adding calcium stearate after formation of the novolak.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 23 words
A composition according to claim 1 which has been made by adding the terpolymer prior to completion of the formation of the novolak.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 19 words
A composition according to claim 8 wherein the terpolymer is 1 to 10% of the phenol in the novolak.
