Abstract
Abstract Alloys reacting with water, water vapor and reactive gases at temperatures in the range of about 200° to about 650° C have essential components of nickel, titanium an zirconium. The alloys can be made by arc melting zirconium, nickel and titanium and can be formed into sheet or foil by inert-atmosphere hot rolling. The alloys can also be made by plating nickel on a sheet of zirconium-titanium alloy and then conduction a diffusion process by heating the plated alloy in vacuum.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim
103 words
A method of stoichiometrically removing moisture and gases selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and oxygen from an enclosed region at temperatures in the range of about 200° to about 650° C comprising the step of contacting the moisture and gases in the enclosed region with an alloy having the essential components of zirconium, nickel and titanium present in amounts of from about 3 to about 12 weight percent nickel, from about 3 to about 30 weight percent titanium and the balance being zirconium, so that said alloy stoichiometrically reacts and combines with said moisture and gases.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
28 words
A method according to claim 1 in which the alloy has a nickel content of about 4 weight percent and a titanium content of about 11 weight percent.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
28 words
A method according to claim 1 in which the alloy has a nickel content of about 12 weight percent and a titanium content of about 11 weight percent.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
16 words
A method according to claim 1 in which the enclosed region is a nuclear fuel element.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
18 words
A method according to claim 1 in which the enclosed region is maintained at less than atmospheric pressure.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
15 words
A method according to claim 1 in which the enclosed region is a glove box.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
30 words
A method according to claim 1 in which the enclosed region is a container for inert gas and the alloy is reactive with other gases present in the inert gas.
