Abstract

Abstract A catalytic process is provided for the selective production of para-xylene by contacting, under conversion conditions, a charge stock containing, as a major reactant, at least one hydrocarbon selected from the group consisting of toluene, a C3-C10 olefin and mixtures of the foregoing with a catalyst comprising a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having a silica to alumina ratio of at least about 12, a constraint index, as hereinafter defined, within the approximate range of 1 to 12 and having combined therewith boron in an amount of at least about 0.2 percent by weight.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 96 words
A process for the selective production of paraxylene which comprises contacting, under conversion conditions, a charge stock consisting essentially of a C 3 -C 10 olefin with a catalyst consisting essentially of a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having a silica to alumina ratio of at least about 12 and a constraint index within the approximate range of 1 to 12, said zeolite having combined therewith boron in an amount of at least about 0.2 percent by weight as a result of reaction of said zeolite with a boron-containing compound; cooling the resulting product and separating para-xylene therefrom.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 96 words
A process for the selective production of paraxylene which comprises contacting, under conversion conditions, a charge stock consisting essentially of a C 3 -C 10 olefin with a catalyst consisting essentially of a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite having a silica to alumina ratio of at least about 12 and a constraint index within the approximate range of 1 to 12, said zeolite having combined therewith boron in an amount of at least about 0.2 percent by weight as a result of reaction of said zeolite with a boron-containing compound; cooling the resulting product and separating para-xylene therefrom.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 41 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said conversion conditions include a temperature between about 300° and about 700° C., a pressure between about atmospheric and about 1500 psig utilizing a weight hourly space velocity of between about 1 and about 1000.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 10 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said olefin is propylene.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 18 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the boron content is between about 1 and about 20 weight percent.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 12 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite is ZSM-5.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 12 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite is ZSM-11.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 13 words
The process of claim 5 wherein ZSM-5 is predominantly in the hydrogen form.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 15 words
The process of claim 5 wherein ZSM-5 is present in combination with a binder therefor.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 13 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the source of boron is boric acid.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 19 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said zeolite has a silica to alumina ratio of at least about 30.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the boron content is between about 1.5 and about 10 weight percent.
