In an Otto cycle internal combustion engine of the rotary epitrochoid type having a plurality of variable volume main combustion chambers each aligned when in full compression with the minor axis of said epitrochoid thereby dividing each combustion chamber into leading and trailing portions with respect to the rotation of the engine, a prechamber ignition system, said engine have means for inducting a combustible mixture into each of said combustion chambers, comprising: a. walls defining first and second generally spherical volumes each disposed outside the rotor of said engine, said first volume being disposed at a location in advance of the minor axis of said epitrochoid wall viewed with respect to the direction of rotation of said rotor and the second volume being disposed at a location after said minor axis and, each of said volumes being arranged to be juxtaposed in each of said main combustion chambers when in their full compression condition, b. walls defining first and second passages connecting separately each of said generally spherical volumes with each of said main combustion chambers when disposed in their full compression condition, the first passage being aligned with the center of said first volume and oriented to direct a torch into each of said main combustion chambers counter to the rotation of said rotor, the second passage being aligned with the center of said second volume and oriented to direct a torch into each of said main combustion chambers in the same direction as the rotation of said rotor, c. walls defining an introduction port to said generally spherical volumes through which is supplied a predetermined gaseous mixture, and d. spark ignition means arranged to selectively apply a spark substantially adjacent the center of each of said volumes for promoting a torch from each said passages.

Claim 3
Independent Claim
292 words
A method for increasing the combustion speed of an Otto cycle internal combustion cycle engine, said engine having a housing and a plurality of variable volume translating main combustion chambers in said housing, each main combustion chamber having leading and trailing portions viewed with respect to the direction of translation of said combustion chamber, the method comprising: a. providing first and second prechambers in said housing, each said prechamber having an orifice communicating with each of said variable volume combustion chambers when the latter are in substantially their smallest volume condition, defining each of said prechambers to have a substantially spherical portion, b. inducting a combustible mixture into each of said main combustion chambers during the induction cycle of said engine, c. introducing a predetermined quantity of combustible mixture into said first and second prechambers during at least a portion of the compression cycle of said engine, said introduced mixture being equal to or richer than the inducted mixture, said introduced mixture being at a pressure equal to or greater than the pressure in said main combustion chamber at the moment of introduction, and d. igniting the introduced mixture in said prechambers substantially at a locus adjacent the center of said spherical portions for generating a flame torch eminating from each of said orifices and directed into said adjacent main combustion chamber during the combustion cycle of said engine, said flame torches having a length greater than any transverse dimension of said main chamber, said torches being arranged to stimulate a vortical entraining motion of the unburned mixture surrounding the torch in the main combustion chamber, said torches being directed generally oppositely to each other and into said main combustion chamber with respect to the translatory movement of said main combustion chamber.
