Abstract

Abstract The invention relates to a method and apparatus for reducing the amount of undesirable products of combustion which are discharged to the atmosphere from an internal combustion engine during operation of the latter. The apparatus comprises, means for segregating a portion of an exhaust gas stream from the engine's exhaust discharge manifold or valve. The hot exhaust gas segment is cooled, combined with air to form a preliminary mixture, and delivered to the engine's combustion chambers. A predetermined volume of fuel is injected into the combustion chamber whereby to intermix with a portion of the preliminary mixture in such a manner that at least a part of the latter becomes combustible. The apparatus for achieving the method comprises, means for recycling said segment of said hot exhaust gas. It further comprises means for controllably regulating the flow of the latter in response to the load variations imposed on the engine.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 162 words
Method for operating an internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber including intake and exhaust valves, in which a hydrocarbon fuel is admixed with a combustion supporting gas to form a combustible mixture, the ignition and burning of which combustible mixture produces a hot exhaust gas stream containing a portion of NO x , which method reduces the NO x content within the exhaust gas emitted from said engine and comprises the steps of; (a) forming a preliminary combustion supporting gaseous mixture, comprising a major portion of air, together with a minor portion of said hot exhaust gas stream, (b) introducing said preliminary air-exhaust gas mixture into said combustion chamber whereby to intermix with said hydrocarbon fuel in said combustion chamber, and to render at least a segment of said air-exhaust gas preliminary mixture combustible, (c) igniting said combustible mixture within said chamber, and (d) segregating a portion of the hot exhaust gas thereby created, to form said preliminary combustion supporting mixture.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 162 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 37 words
In the method as defined in claim 1, wherein said major portion of air in said preliminary combustion supporting mixture is present in an amount between approximately 70 and 90 parts by volume of the gas mixture.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 35 words
In the method as defined in claim 1, including the step of; precooling said minor portion of said exhaust gas stream, prior to mixing with said air whereby to form said preliminary air-exhaust gas mixture.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 43 words
In the method as defined in claim 1, including the step of; adjusting the volumetric flow of said portion of exhaust gas intermixed with air to form said preliminary air-exhaust gas mixture in response to the load applied to said internal combustion engine.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 36 words
In the method as defined in claim 1, including the step of; segregating said minor portion of said exhaust gas from said exhaust gas stream at a point immediately downstream of said combustion chamber exhaust valve.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 34 words
In the method as defined in claim 1, including the step of; adjustably regulating the volumetric flow of said preliminary gaseous mixture to said combustion chamber subsequent to the formation of said preliminary mixture.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 52 words
In the method as defined in claim 1, including the step of; simultaneously adjusting the volumetric flow of that portion of gas segregated from said exhaust gas stream, and the volumetric flow of preliminary gaseous mixture introduced to said combustion chamber, in response to variations in the load imposed on said engine.
