Independent Claim
273 words
A method for imparting opposed side gussets to a flexible generally vertical tube of plastic having little or no crease memory, and while generally simultaneously filling the tube with successive product loads to produce filled, side gusseted, industrial size bags therefrom, the steps which include forming a flexible tube about a hollow filling mandrel, the lower end portion of which is configured to impart a gusseted shape to the tube, flattening the tube along a zone extending across the width of the tube to form a temporary bottom, said zone being initially positioned generally near to and below the configured lower end portion of the filling mandrel, drawing the tube downwardly to provide a product receiving space, dumping a product load through the filling mandrel to fill the product receiving space, externally restraining the tube against outward movement thereof away from the configured end portion of the filling mandrel accompanying each dumping step, said restraining step being applied near the extreme lower end of the configured end portion of the filling mandrel, repeating the flattening step generally closely above the dumped product load, and in the time interval prior to the repetition of said flattening step, conforming the tube by vacuum suction against said configured end portion of the filling mandrel to inwardly tuck opposed portions of the tube in that region thereof adjacent the top of the product load, the tucked configuration being temporarily retained in the tube by said flattening step, and prior to releasing the flattening pressure on the tube, sealing the tube across its width in the flattened zone to permanently secure the inward tucks in the tube structure.
