Abstract

Abstract A method of forming particles of between about 5 and about 50 microns utilizing a two stage process wherein monomer possibly containing pigments, dyes and/or fillers such as silicon and magnetite, as well as chemical reagents such as crosslinking agents and chain transfer agents, is sized to a narrow range by high shear mixing then polymerized during slow speed agitation to form polymeric particles.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 98 words
A method of small particle formation comprising mixing a monomer composition in an aqueous solution comprising water and a stabilization agent, subjecting the mixture to high shear agitation for a short time of about 0.5 to about 5 minutes to size the monomer, transferring the sized monomer to a reaction vessel, slowly agitating the sized monomer in said reaction vessel, polymerizing the monomer and recovering polymeric particles of small, uniform size distribution wherein 95 percent of said polymeric particles range between about 5 and about 25 microns as a result of said shear agitation to size the monomer.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method of claim 1 wherein 95 percent of said polymeric particles has a size distribution range of about 15 microns to about 25 microns.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 13 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said monomer has a pigment dispersed therein.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the high shear agitation device is a rotor-stator mixer.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 12 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said stabilization agent is polyvinyl alcohol.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 22 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said stabilization agent comprises about 0.5 to about 5 percent by weight of said aqueous solution.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said monomer is selected from the group consisting of styrenes, olefins, epoxys and acrylates.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said monomer composition additionally comprises a polymerization initiator.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said monomer further comprises a material selected from the group comprising chain transfer agents, crosslinking agents and mixtures thereof.
