Abstract

Abstract An active antibacterial substance from Pseudomonas fluorescens bacterium designated pseudomonic acid and as a coproduct a minor amount of a compound having an additional OH group designated as pseudomonic acid I. These two substances obtained are separated and purified. Alkali metal salts and methyl esters can be prepared. The antibacterial activity of pseudomonic acid appears to reside in the free acid from which results from in vivo hydrolysis of the methyl ester which is crystalline.
