Abstract

Abstract A stream of gas atomized particles moves past a secondary gas stream towards a substrate. The secondary stream is directed in an oscillatory manner against the stream of atomized particles to deflect the latter such that the particles are distributed in a controlled manner over the surface of the substrate.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 144 words
A process for spraying atomized particles onto a substrate comprising the steps of: producing a stream of gas atomized particles and directing the stream towards said substrate; directing secondary streams of gas sequentially against the stream of gas atomized particles from opposite sides thereof to deflect the stream of gas atomized particles and to impart thereto a continuous oscillation substantially in a single plane, said secondary streams each having a component of motion which is in the undeflected direction of flow of the stream of atomized particles and each having a maximum pressure in the same order of magnitude as the pressure of the gas in the atomized particle stream; and moving said substrate relative to the plane of the particle stream whereby the plane intersects said substrate along a line substantially at a right angle to the direction of movement of the substrate.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 144 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
A process according to claim 1, in which the particles are atomized metal particles.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 33 words
A process according to claim 1, in which the secondary gas streams are at an angle to the undeflected direction of flow of the stream of atomized particles of from 30° to 60°.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
A process according to claim 1, in which said secondary streams of gas are supplied sequentially from the same pressure source.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
A process according to claim 4, in which the supply of gas to the secondary gas streams is controlled by a rotary valve rotating at a uniform speed.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 19 words
A process according to claim 5 in which the rotary valve is operated at from 100 to 1000 r.p.m.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 33 words
A process according to claim 6, in which the substrate is moved relative to the plane of oscillation of the particle stream at a rate of from 1 to 100 meters per minute.
