Abstract Electrochemical cells utilize crystalline chalcogen halides as solid eleclytes. Processes for the manufacture of the chalcogen halides and of the solid electrolyte cells are disclosed.

The electrochemical energy cell as defined in claim 1, wherein said first electrode is Cu, said solid electrolyte is in the form of three successive and contiguous chalcogen halides, the first being a mixture of Cu and CuTeI in contact with said first electrode, the second being CuTeI, and the third being a mixture of Cu and CuTeI, and said second electrode is TeI, said second electrode being in contact with said third solid electrolyte.
