Abstract

Abstract Catalyst composition for the dimerization of acrylonitrile comprising an organo-phosphorus compound of formula <IMAGE> bonded to a matrix of an inorganic oxide having surface -OH groups, especially of silica or alumina. Groups R and Y are hydrocarbyl. The catalyst compositions are prepared by heating the matrix with an appropriate phosphorus compound having group(s) X which react with -OH groups with the elimination of HX. The invention also relates to a process for the dimerization of acrylonitrile. Main products are 1,4-dicyanobutene-1 and 2-methylene glutaronitrile.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 91 words
A catalyst composition, suitable for use in the dimerisation of acrylonitrile, consisting essentially of a matrix of a refractory metal oxide having chemically bonded to the surface thereof one or more organo phosphorus radicals of general formula ##STR5## where groups R, which may be the same or different, present hydrocarbyl groups and Y represents either a divalent hydrocarbyl group or a direct link, the appropriate phosphorus atom or atoms of the compound being bonded to the matrix through the oxygen atom of one or more surface hydroxyl groups of the matrix.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 91 words
A catalyst composition, suitable for use in the dimerisation of acrylonitrile, consisting essentially of a matrix of a refractory metal oxide having chemically bonded to the surface thereof one or more organo phosphorus radicals of general formula ##STR5## where groups R, which may be the same or different, present hydrocarbyl groups and Y represents either a divalent hydrocarbyl group or a direct link, the appropriate phosphorus atom or atoms of the compound being bonded to the matrix through the oxygen atom of one or more surface hydroxyl groups of the matrix.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
A composition as claimed in claim 1 in which the refractory metal oxide is alumina, silica or silica/alumina.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
A composition as claimed in claim 1 in which the groups R are selected from ethyl, phenyl and cyclohexyl.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 109 words
A process for the preparation of catalyst compositions as claimed in claim 1 in which a matrix of a refractory metal oxide having surface hydroxyl groups is reacted with a phosphorus compound of general formula ##STR6## where R and Y have the same significance as in claim 1 and X represents a anionic group capable of reacting with the hydrogen atom of a surface hydroxyl group to cause the phosphorus atom to which the group X was originally attached to bond to the matrix via the oxygen atom of the said hydroxyl group, with elimination of compound HX, and the catalyst composition washed to remove any free phosphorus compound.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
A process as claimed in claim 4 in which the group X is an alkoxide or an amide.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 26 words
A process as claimed in claim 4 in which the matrix material is first heat treated at a temperature in the range 150° to 600° C.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
A catalyst composition as claimed in claim 1 produced by a process of claim 4.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 24 words
A process as claimed in claim 4 in which the group X is an anionic group selected from alkoxide, amide, chloride, bromide or iodide.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 19 words
A composition as claimed in claim 2 in which the groups R are selected from ethyl, phenyl and cyclohexyl.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 26 words
A process as claimed in claim 5 in which the matrix material is first heat treated at a temperature in the range 150° to 600° C.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 12 words
A catalyst composition produced by a process as claimed in claim 5.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 12 words
A catalyst composition produced by a process as claimed in claim 6.
