Abstract
Abstract A process for the recovery of selenium from a urethane solution containing selenium compounds which may be in the form of metallic selenium, inorganic selenium and/or organoselenium compounds which comprises contacting the selenium-containing urethane solution at suitable temperatures with a supported metal or a mixture of metals and/or metal oxide compounds, said metal selectively chosen from Group B metals, i.e., Group IB through VIIIB, metals of the Periodic Table and particularly supported copper and mixtures of copper and other metal oxide compounds of said group.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
185 words
A process for the recovery of selenium or compounds thereof from selenium-containing urethane solutions derived from the selenium catalyzed reaction of an organic compound containing at least one hydroxyl group with carbon monoxide and a nitrogenous organic compound at elevated temperatures and pressures in the presence of a base and/or water, which comprises treating said urethane solution with a mixture of metals and metal oxides at a temperature in the range of from about 25° to 250° C. to retain and remove said selenium or compound thereof from said urethane solution, said metals and metal oxides being selected from metals and oxides of Group IB, IIB, VIB and VIIIB metals of the Periodic Table of Elements, recovering the treated urethane solution, and subjecting the mixture of metal and metal oxide with retained selenium or compounds thereof to treatment with air or oxygen at a temperature of from 250° to 800° C. and pressures of up to 50 atmospheres to convert the selenium to selenium dioxide, and recovering said selenium dioxide from said mixture of metal and metal oxide for reuse in said selenium catalyzed reaction.

Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
34 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein the selenium-containing urethane solution is treated with said mixture of metals and metal oxides at a temperature in the range of from about 75° to 150° C.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
38 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein the treatment with air or oxygen is carried out at a temperature in the range of about 400° to 650° C. and a pressure of from about 1 to 20 atmospheres.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
49 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein the deselenized mixture of metal and metal oxide is regenerated with hydrogen at a temperature of from 80° to 450° C. and a hydrogen pressure of from 0.01 to 10 atmospheres for reuse in the removal of selenium from selenium-containing urethane solutions.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
34 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein the metals and metal oxides in the mixture are selected from the group consisting of nickel, copper, silver, chromium, cadmium, palladium, cobalt and zinc the their oxides.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
42 words
A process according to claim 5 wherein the mixture of metal and metal oxide is a member selected from the group consisting of a mixture of copper and zinc oxide, copper and copper chromite, and copper and cadmium oxide and chromium oxide.
