Claim 1
Independent Claim
276 words
A medical radiographic apparatus for producing an image of the variation of absorption coefficient, with respect to penetrating radiation, over a slice disposed cross-sectionally in a patient's body, the apparatus including an angularly movable supporting structure having an opening to accommodate the part of the patient's body which contains said slice, a source of a fan-shaped spread of the penetrating radiation, supported by said structure at one side of said opening so as to project said radiation across said opening, a plurality of detectors, supported by said structure at the opposite side of said opening to said source, to receive radiation from said source after it has traversed said opening, said detectors being disposed to receive radiation from said source along respective beam paths diverging from said source and included within said fan-shaped spread of radiation, means for angularly moving said supporting structure, and with it said source and said detectors, about an axis intersecting said slice, through first and second substantial angles and for deriving a series of output signals from each detector during their movement through each of said substantial angles, each output signal being indicative of the radiation transmitted over a respective beam path and obtained whilst said structure rotates through a relatively small angle, and means for causing the angular positions of the beam paths within said fan-shaped spread to be changed by a small amount relative to the structure for angular movement of said structure through said second substantial angle as compared with the angular positions of the beam paths for the angular movement of said structure through said first substantial angle to provide interleaving beam paths within said fan-shaped spread.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
186 words
Medical radiographic apparatus comprising means defining a patient position, a source of a substantially planar, fan-shaped spread of X-radiation, support means supporting said source so that said radiation propagates along a plurality of divergent beam paths through a region of said patient position, detecting means, also supported by said support means, including a plurality of detector devices, each detecting the radiation emergent from said region along a respective one of said beam paths, scanning means for moving said support means, and with it said source and said detecting means, angularly around the patient position causing said source to project said radiation through said region along further beam paths and said detecting means to detect the radiation emergent from the region along said further beam paths, and means, operative at an intermediate stage in said angular movement, for further displacing at least said detecting means relative to said support means, causing each detector device, after the further displacement, to detect radiation emergent from said region along beam paths close to, but not coincident with, beam paths along which it detected emergent radiation prior to the further displacement.
