Abstract

Abstract For making supported copper catalyst, useful in hydration of nitriles to produce amides, a cuprous compound e.g. cuprous chloride is impregnated into a support material, e.g. alumina, using acrylonitrile or acetonitrile as the imbibing solvent which is then removed by evaporation. The cuprous compound in the support is reduced to copper in situ, by contact with a reducing agent e.g. sodium borohydride.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 76 words
A method of making reduced copper catalyst supported on a water-insoluble, porous catalyst support, said method comprising the steps: a. impregnating said catalyst support with a solution of cuprous compound dissolved in a solvent selected from acetonitrile and acrylonitrile, and b. evaporating the solvent from the support, leaving cuprous compound deposited on the support, and c. reducing the cuprous compound on the support to copper in situ by contacting the impregnated support with a reducing agent.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 76 words
A method of making reduced copper catalyst supported on a water-insoluble, porous catalyst support, said method comprising the steps: a. impregnating said catalyst support with a solution of cuprous compound dissolved in a solvent selected from acetonitrile and acrylonitrile, and b. evaporating the solvent from the support, leaving cuprous compound deposited on the support, and c. reducing the cuprous compound on the support to copper in situ by contacting the impregnated support with a reducing agent.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 16 words
A method defined by claim 1 wherein the reducing agent is aqueous solution of sodium borohydride.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 13 words
A method defined by claim 1 wherein the cuprous compound is cuprous chloride.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
A method defined by claim 2 wherein the defined aqueous solution of borohydride contains sodium hydroxide.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 13 words
A method defined in claim 1 wherein the defined catalyst support is alumina.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 13 words
A method defined by claim 2 wherein the cuprous compound is cuprous chloride.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 21 words
A method defined by claim 1 wherein the steps (a) and (b) are repeated before the step (c) is carried out.
