Abstract
Abstract A thoracic drainage device including a container for receiving drainage fluid, and a drainage tube for connecting the pleural cavity of a patient to be drained to the container, the outlet end of the tube being disposed below the level of liquid in the container to provide a liquid seal. The container includes a gas outlet for connection with the atmosphere or to a source of vacuum, and an annular defoaming member in close surrounding relation with the drainage tube and in the flow path of gas flowing from the drainage tube to the gas outlet for minimizing foam.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim
123 words
A thoracic drainage collection device comprising a container for collecting body fluid having a chamber adapted to receive an initial quantity of liquid therein, fluid passage means having an inlet for fluid communication with a body cavity to be drained, said fluid passage means extending into said chamber and having an outlet disposed below the level of the liquid in said chamber when said initial quantity of liquid is disposed therein so that all gas flowing from said fluid passage means flows into liquid in said chamber, gas outlet means on said container for passing gas out of said container, and defoaming means in said container in the flow path of substantially all gas flowing from said outlet to said gas outlet means.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
24 words
The device of claim 1 wherein said passage means comprises a tubular member, and said defoaming means at least partially surrounds said tubular member.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
14 words
The device of claim 2 wherein said defoaming means completely encircles said tubular member.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
17 words
The device of claim 1 wherein said defoaming means comprises an open-cell sponge member of plastic material.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
16 words
The device of claim 4 wherein said open-cell sponge member is coated with a defoaming agent.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
63 words
The device of claim 1 wherein said chamber is in the upper portion of said container and is open at the top whereby drainage fluid can flow from the chamber and out the open top thereof and into a portion of the container below said chamber, and wherein said defoaming means extends above the open top of said chamber adjacent said passage means.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
27 words
The device of claim 1 wherein said gas outlet means comprises tube coupling means for connecting the interior of said container with a source of negative pressure.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
31 words
The device of claim 1 wherein said fluid passage means includes means for connecting said fluid passage means with the pleural cavity of a patient for draining blood and gas therefrom.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
57 words
The device of claim 1 wherein said chamber has an upper wall within said container which has an opening for the flow of fluid out of said chamber and into a portion of the interior of said container, and said defoaming means completely covers said opening so that all fluid flowing therethrough flows into said defoaming means.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
32 words
The device of claim 1 wherein said defoaming means is disposed in said container in a position such that all liquid and gas flowing from said chamber flows through said defoaming means.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
36 words
The device of claim 1 wherein said defoaming means is disposed in said container such that substantially all gas flowing from said chamber to said gas outlet means must pass therethrough during operation of the device.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
44 words
The device of claim 1 wherein said defoaming means is disposed in said container adjacent the exterior of said passage means and extends above the flow of gas-free blood and such that substantially all blood foam must pass therethrough during operation of the device.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
195 words
A thoracic drainage collection device comprising a container for collecting body fluid having a chamber adapted to receive an initial quantity of liquid therein, fluid passage means having an inlet for fluid communication with a body cavity to be drained, said fluid passage means extending into said chamber and having an outlet disposed below the level of the liquid in said chamber when said initial quantity of liquid is disposed therein so that all gas flowing from said fluid passage means flows into liquid in said chamber, gas outlet means on said container for passing gas out of said container, and defoaming means in said container in the flow path of substantially all gas flowing from said outlet to said gas outlet means, said chamber having a top cover with an opening therein, said passage means comprising a tube extending through said opening and providing a radial space between the outer surface of said tube and the walls of said opening for the flow of fluid therethrough, and said defoaming means comprising a member of defoaming material surrounding said tube and in the contact with said tube and the upper surface of said top cover.
Claim 15
Claim 16
Dependent Claim
34 words
