Abstract
Abstract There is disclosed the magnetic polarization of a tubular gaseous laser device comprising a laser capillary tube with anode and laser end pieces, a cathode, a cathode envelope, and a gas exhaust stem for filling the device with a laseable gas. Magnetic polarization of the light output from the laser is achieved by applying a magnetic field to the lasing capillary and the rotation of the laser within the magnetic field to optimize the extinction ratio.

Independent Claim
87 words
In a process for manufacturing a tubular gaseous laser device having a gas lasing capillary, the improvement which comprises: (a) applying a substantially uniform permanent magnetic field to at least a portion of the capillary so as to polarize the light being emitted from the capillary; and (b) rotating the laser device with respect to the magnetic field until the laser device is so oriented with respect to the magnetic field that a maximum extinction ratio is obtained for polarized light being emitted by the laser device.
Claim 2

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
79 words
In a tubular gaseous laser device comprising a cathode, an anode, a laseable gas, and a gas lasing capillary, the improvement wherein at least two opposing permanent magnets are juxtapositioned near the capillary to thereby create a substantially uniform magnetic field so as to polarize light being emitted from the capillary, said laser device being oriented with respect to said magnetic field such that a maximum extinction ratio is obtained for polarized light being emitted by said laser device.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim

Claim 5
Dependent Claim
23 words
The device of claim 2 wherein the magnetic field of each magnet is in a direction perpendicular to the length of the capillary.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
39 words
The device of claim 3 wherein a ferromagnetic collar is positioned around the magnets so as to transmit magnetic flux from each opposing magnet to the other and increase the magnetic field in the capillary by at least 100%.
