Abstract

Abstract A process for treating mixtures of isopropylnaphthalenes (IPN) obtained from any source and increasing the beta-isopropylnaphthalene content thereof by a batch or continuous isomerization reaction in the presence of a rare earth metal ammonium-exchanged, "Y Type" crystalline aluminosilicate catalyst. The process also includes disproportionation of higher alkylates of naphthalene, such as diisopropylnaphthalene, to increase the IPN content of said mixtures.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 131 words
A process for increasing the beta-isopropylnaphthalene content of a mixture containing essentially naphthalene, alpha- and beta-isopropylnaphthalene and diisopropylnaphthalene, which comprises contacting said mixture with a diluted rare earth metal ammonium-exchanged, synthetic, crystalline "Y" type allumino-silicate catalyst at a temperature of from about 150° C. to 260° C., with a space velocity of from about 0.1 to 4 hour.sup. -1 , at a gauge pressure of from about 200 psi to 500 psi, said mixture having about 1 to 10 equivalents naphthalene per equivalent of propylene, removing residual naphthalene from the reaction product, and further contacting the naphthalene-free product with a rare earth metal ammonium-exchanged, 100% synthetic, crystalline "Y" type aluminosilicate catalyst at a temperature of from about 70° C. to 175° C., at substantially atmospheric pressure, and recovering the product therefrom.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 131 words
