Claim 3
Dependent Claim
118 words
An electrical connector according to claim 1, in which the wire connecting portion of each terminal is U-shaped, a wire-receiving slot being formed in each arm of the U, the slots being aligned with each other, and both slots opening in the direction of the contact portion of the terminal so that upon insertion of the terminal into an opening of the housing, the arms of the U can straddle the abutment which is in the form of a saddle, so that the saddle forces the wire into both the slots of the wire connecting portion so that the edges of the slots pierce the insulation of the wire to engage the electrically conductive core of the wire.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
103 words
An electrical connector according to claim 1, in which each abutment is in the form of a saddle which has a slot to receive the wire connecting portion which is in the form of a plate having a wire-receiving slot opening towards the contact portion of the terminal, the slot in the saddle opening into a wire engaging surface thereof, so that when the terminal is inserted into the opening, such surface forces the wire into the slot of the plate so that the edges of such slot pierce the insulation of the wire to engage the electrically conductive core of the wire.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
153 words
An electrical connector according to claim 1, in which the openings of the housing are separated from one another by T-cross-section partitions which are elongate in the direction of insertion of the terminals into the openings, an arm of each partition extending across each opening, in the longitudinal direction of the housing, to provide the abutment of such opening and presenting a wire engaging surface in substantial alignment with the base of one of the notches, the wire connecting portion of each terminal being in the form of a plate having a slot opening towards the contact portion of the terminal, the slot being dimensioned to receive the arm when the terminal is inserted into the opening so that the wire engaging surface of the arm forces the wire into the slot whereby the edges of the slot pierce the insulation of the wire to engage the electrically conductive core of the wire.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
169 words
An electrical connector according to claim 1, in which the notched wall of the housing projects from the housing beyond the first ends of the openings, each opening having a slot portion at its first end for receiving and confining the wire connecting portion of the terminal which is in the form of a plate having a slot opening towards the contact portion of the terminal, the slot portion of the opening communicating with and being juxtaposed with a second portion of the opening which is dimensioned for receiving the contact portion of the terminal which portion is in the form of a receptacle, the slot portion of the opening being positioned adjacent to the notched wall, and being bounded by wire engaging surfaces so that when the terminal is inserted into the opening, the wire engaging surfaces force the wire into the slot in the plate so that the edges of such slot pierce the insulation of the wire to engage the electrically conductive core of the wire.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
55 words
An electrical connector according to claim 4, in which the plate is formed with a reinforcing rib extending alongside the slot in the plate, the contact portion being carried by an arm extending in the same direction as the slot in the plate, an being laterally offset therefrom, the arm having a longitudinal reinforcing rib.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
54 words
An electrical connector according to claim 5, in which the plate is formed with a reinforcing rib extending alongside the slot in the plate, the receptacle being carried by an arm extending in the same direction as the slot in the plate, and being laterally offset therefrom the arm having a longitudinal reinforcing rib.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
140 words
An electrical terminal comprising a receptacle portion for mating with a complementary male contact member and a wire connecting portion in the form of a plate having a slot to receive an insulated electrical wire so that the edges of the slot pierce the insulation of the wire to make permanent electrical contact with the electrically conductive core of the wire, the slot opening in the direction of the receptacle portion, the plate being formed with a linear reinforcing rib extending along one side of the slot, the receptacle portion of the terminal being carried by an arm extending in the same direction as the slot and having formed therein a longitudinal stiffening rib, opposite edges of the plate on either side of the slot being formed with projections for locking the terminal in a housing with a wedging action.
