Abstract
Abstract Novel compounds comprising water-soluble salts of partial esters of maleic anhydride and polyhydric alcohols containing at least three hydroxy groups sequester and retard the precipitation of Ca<++> ions, and function as detergent builders for washing and cleaning compositions in aqueous solutions thereof.

A detergent composition consisting essentially of between about 5 percent and about 50 percent, by weight of the total composition, of a detergent-active compound and a detergent builder compound having the formula: R--(OOC--CH=CH--COOM) n , wherein M is an alkali metal or ammonium ion; R is the residue of a polyol selected from the group consisting of pentaerythritol, dipentaerythritol, tripentaerythritol, sorbitol, sucrose, mannitol, and arabitol; and n is the number of hydroxyl groups of said polyol; the weight ratio of said detergent builder compound to said detergent-active compound being between about 10:1 and about 1:10.
