Abstract

Abstract A fastening device for securing articles together, the device including releasably connected male and female components. The male component comprises a pin and the female component comprises a retaining insert positioned in a housing for releasably clamping the pin. When joined, the pin can not be separated from the retainer except by a special tool. The insert is of magnetic material, and an actuating tool including an electromagnet is employed to actuate the insert to permit removal of the pin. The housed insert is attached to a tag, with the tag being attached to the article which is to be sold. The tag houses an electrical circuit which activates an alarm if the tag is not properly removed at the checkout point by means of the special tool.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 136 words
A detaching tool adapted to release a fastening device forming part of a separate and independent tag assembly for tagging articles, comprising: a. a housing in the form of a detachable cover and a bottom plate; b. a magnetic coil and core mounted on said plate; c. switch means exposed exteriorly of said cover; d. a source of alternating current, and e. circuit means electrically interconnecting said switch means and said magnetic coil for energizing said magnetic coil, said circuit means including a rectifying bridge and overload protection means for interrupting the circuit to said magnetic coil when said switch means has been closed a predetermined period of time, whereby when said fastening device is positioned adjacent said detaching tool and said switch means is closed, said magnetic coil is activated for releasing said fastening device.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 136 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 94 words
The detaching tool of claim 1 wherein said overload protection means comprises a normally open delay relay and a normally closed second relay, the coil of said second relay being electrically connected to said alternating current source through the contacts of said delay relay when the latter is in a closed position, the contacts of said delay relay closing after a predetermined time period of closing of said switch means, and the contacts of said second relay thereupon opening for interrupting the circuit to said magnetic coil for preventing overheating of said magnetic coil.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 56 words
The detaching tool of claim 1 wherein said switch means is mounted on said cover, and said magnetic coil, rectifying bridge and overload protection means are mounted on said bottom plate, and further including plug connector means carried by said cover and said plate for establishing said circuit when said cover is positioned on said plate.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 35 words
The detaching tool of claim 1 wherein said circuit means further includes an indicator light positioned in and exposed exteriorly of said cover for indicating the closing of said circuit means through said magnetic coil.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 57 words
The detaching tool of claim 1 wherein said magentic coil is positioned on said bottom plate with its axis perpendicular to said plate, said core when energized being positioned just below an indicator opening in the top wall of said cover thereby to facilitate release of said fastening device when said tool is positioned adjacent the same.
