Abstract

Abstract A novel method for applying adjuvants to fabric employing a tumbler-type dryer is disclosed. To achieve uniform distribution in the dryer, the adjuvant, in accordance with the present invention, is diluted with a diluent spreadable under the dryer conditions, the concentration of the adjuvant in the diluent being effective but not in excess of about 95% by weight. Novel compositions of matter suitable for use in the practice of this invention are also disclosed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 90 words
A composition of matter in solid form for the application of an adjuvant to a fabric in a tumbler-type dryer, consisting essentially of an adjuvant for said fabric and a distributing agent therefor, said adjuvant being present in an effective concentration not exceeding about 95% by weight and selected from the group consisting of fabric softeners, optical brighteners and anti-static agents and said distributing agent being selected from the group consisting of ammonium carbonate and water-soluble, lower molecular weight, innocuous hydroxy carboxylic acids which promote the spreading of the adjuvant.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 90 words
A composition of matter in solid form for the application of an adjuvant to a fabric in a tumbler-type dryer, consisting essentially of an adjuvant for said fabric and a distributing agent therefor, said adjuvant being present in an effective concentration not exceeding about 95% by weight and selected from the group consisting of fabric softeners, optical brighteners and anti-static agents and said distributing agent being selected from the group consisting of ammonium carbonate and water-soluble, lower molecular weight, innocuous hydroxy carboxylic acids which promote the spreading of the adjuvant.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
A composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein said distributing agent is ammonium carbonate.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 170 words
A composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein said adjuvant is a fabric softening agent selected from the group consisting of (1) quaternary ammonium compounds of the formula [N(R 1 R 2 R 3 R 3 )]yX wherein R 1 is C 16 -C 20 alkyl, R 2 is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, each R 3 is selected from the group consisting of R 1 and R 2 , X is an anion imparting water dispersibility and y is the valency of X, and (2) the quaternized reaction product of about 2 moles of a fatty acid of the formula R 4 COOH and about one mole of a diamine of the formula ##STR2##wherein R 4 is a C 15 -C 19 alkyl, R 5 is a C 2 divalent hydrocarbon radical and R 6 is a C 1 -C 3 hydroxy alkyl, said reaction product containing about 25% quaternary compounds of the imidazoline type, the balance thereof being mixed esters and amides, and (3) quaternized tallow amidoimidazolines.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 74 words
A composition of matter according to claim 3 wherein said adjuvant is a quaternary compound of the formula [N(R 1 R 2 R 3 R 3 )]yX wherein R 1 is C 16 -C 20 alkyl, R 2 is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, each R 3 is selected from the group consisting of R 1 and R 2 , X is an anion imparting water dispersibility and y is the valency of X.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
A composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein the adjuvant is an effective softening agent for the fabric to be treated.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 15 words
A composition of matter according to claim 5 wherein the fabric softening agent is cationic.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 22 words
A composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein the adjuvant is an effective optical brightener for the fabric to be treated.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 18 words
A composition of matter according to claim 7 wherein the optical brightener is a disulfonated, diamino stilbeno compound.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 22 words
A composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein the adjuvant is an effective antistatic agent for the fabric to be treated.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 30 words
A composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein the water soluble, lower molecular weight innocuous carboxylic acids are selected from the group consisting of citric, tartaric, and gluconic acids.
