Claim 1
Independent Claim
207 words
A system for measuring a fluid stream wherein gas is interspersed with oil to provide separate mass flow readings of gas and oil, said system comprising: A. a vortex meter having a flow tube through which the stream is conducted to produce an output signal whose frequency depends on the volumetric flow and whose amplitude depends on the mass flow of the stream; B. a liquid-mass flow indicator; C. a gas-mass flow indicator; D. a density detector responsive to the frequency of said output signal which varies as a function of volumetric flow and to the amplitude of said output signal which varies as a function of mass flow to produce a density signal whose level depends on whether there is gas or oil passing through the meter; and E. switching means controlled by said density signal to direct said output signal from said meter to said liquid-mass flow indicator which is responsive to the amplitude thereof to provide a reading of the mass of liquid in said fluid stream or to said gas-mass flow indicator which is responsive to the amplitude thereof to provide a reading of the mass of gas in said fluid stream, whichever indicator is appropriate to the fluid passing through the meter.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
36 words
A system as set forth in claim 1, wherein said vortex meter is provided with swirl blades causing the fluid passing through the flow tube to precess to produce fluidic oscillations sensed by a pressure sensor.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
21 words
A system as set forth in claim 2, wherein said pressure sensor includes a piezoelectric element to generate said output signal.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
59 words
A system as set forth in claim 1, wherein said vortex meter is provided with an obstacle assembly producing a Karman vortex street, said assembly having a deflectable section which is caused to vibrate at a frequency determined by the vortices, and a strain gauge sensor mounted on said assembly to sense said vibrations to produce said output signal.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
91 words
A system as set forth in claim 1, wherein said density detector comprises a first channel responsive to the output signal to produce a first analog voltage which depends on the frequency of the output signal and therefore on volumetric flow, and to produce a second analog signal which depends on the amplitude of the output signal and therefore on mass flow, and means to divide the second analog voltage by the first analog voltage to produce a third analog voltage which depends on density and therefore constitutes said density signal.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
45 words
A system as set forth in claim 5, further including a liquid-volumetric flow indicator and a gas-volumetric flow indicator, and switching means responsive to said density signal to direct said first analog voltage to the volumetric indicator appropriate to the fluid passing through the meter.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
45 words
A system as set forth in claim 5, wherein said first channel is formed by a Schmitt trigger which produces pulses at a rate corresponding to the frequency of the output signal, and a frequency-to-voltage converter to convert the pulses to said first analog voltage.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
37 words
A system as set forth in claim 7, further including a liquid-volumetric flow register and a gas volumetric flow register and switching means responsive to said density signal to direct said pulses to whichever register is appropriate.
