Initiator for anaerobic compositions

Claim 2

An adhesive or sealant composition having anaerobic curing properties, comprising: a. an anaerobically curable monomer containing polymeryable acrylate functionality; and b. about 0.01 to about 10% by weight of the composition of a peroxide of the formula ##STR10## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of C 1 to about C 10 alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, and cycloalkenyl and C 6 to about C 15 aryl, aralkyl and alkaryl; R' is hydrogen or R; y is 2 or 3; and Q is a polar moiety selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl, amino, halo, nitro, nitrile, carboxyl, sulfo, sulfino and mercapto.

Claim 3

The composition of claim 1 wherein Q is hydroxyl.

Claim 4

The composition of claim 1 wherein R' is R and R is selected from the group consisting of C 1 to about C 5 alkyl and cycloalkyl.

Claim 5

The composition of claim 3 wherein y is 2 and R' is hydrogen.

Claim 6

The composition of claim 1 wherein the peroxide has the formula ##STR11##

Claim 7

The composition of claim 1 wherein the concentration of the peroxide is about 0.05 to about 5% by weight of the composition.

Claim 8

The composition of claim 1 wherein the monomer has the formula ##STR12## wherein R 6 represents a radical selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, lower alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms, hydroxy alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms, and ##STR13## R 4 is a radical selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, and lower alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms; R 5 is a radical selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, --OH and ##STR14## m is an integer equal to at least 1; n is an integer equal to at least 1; and p is 0 or 1.

Claim 9

The composition of claim 7 wherein the monomer is polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate.

Claim 10

The composition of claim 7 wherein the monomer is butylene glycol dimethacrylate.

Claim 11

The composition of claim 1 wherein the monomer has the formula ##STR15## wherein n is an integer from 2 to about 6; B is a polyvalent organic radical selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl and heterocyclic radicals both substituted and unsubstituted; and R 1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, chlorine and methyl and ethyl radical; R 2 is a divalent organic radical selected from the group consisting of lower alkylene of 1 through 8 carbon atoms, phenylene and naphthylene, and X is selected from the group consisting of --0--and ##STR16## and R 3 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and lower alkyl of 1 through 7 carbon atoms.

Claim 12

The composition of claim 1 wherein the monomer comprises a urethane-acrylate-capped polybutadiene polyol or polyamine.

Claim 13

The composition of claim 1 wherein the monomer comprises a urethane-acrylate-capped poly(methylene) ether polyol.

Claim 14

The composition of claim 1 wherein the monomer comprises a urethane-acrylate-capped vinyl grafted poly(alkylene) ether polyol.

Claim 15

The composition of claim 1 which contains in addition an accelerator of free radical polymerization.

Claim 16

The composition of claim 14 wherein the accelerator is an alkyl aryl amine.

Claim 17

The composition of claim 14 wherein the accelerator is a sulfimide.

Claim 18

The composition of claim 16 wherein the accelerator is benzoic sulfimide.

Claim 19

The composition of claim 1 containing as an accelerator a mixture of one or more amines with a sulfimide.

Claim 20

The composition of claim 1 which contains in addition an inhibitor of free radical polymerization.

Claim 21

A method of adhering or sealing surfaces comprising applying to at least one of said surfaces the composition of claim 1, then placing said surfaces in abutting relationship and permitting the composition to cure.
