A process which comprises reacting 5-methylthio-1-phenyltetrazole and triethyloxonium fluoroborate at a temperature of between about 15° and 40° C. in anhydrous dichloromethane to yield 3-ethyl-5-methylthio-1-phenyltetrazolium fluoroborate and isolating said fluoroborate.

A process which comprises reacting 5-methylthio-1-phenyltetrazole and triethyloxonium fluoroborate at a temperature of between about 15° and 40° C. in anhydrous dichloromethane to yield 3-ethyl-5-methylthio-1-phenyltetrazolium fluoroborate and isolating said fluoroborate.

The process of claim 5 which includes the additional step of reacting said 3-ethyl-5-methylthio-1-phenyltetrazolium fluoroborate at a temperature of between about 0° and 10° C. with (a) sodium hydrogen selenide in aqueous alkanol solution or (b) sodium hydrogen sulfide in alkanol solution to yield the corresponding meso-ionic compound.
