Abstract

Abstract A tartarous beverage, such as wine, containing a tartrate to be removed therefrom is conveyed from a storage container through a conduit under pressure into a first module having a semipermeable membrane. The semipermeable membrane forms two streams, a tartrate-free permeate and a concentrate containing a solution of said tartarous beverage and tartrate. The permeate stream is directed from the module through a conduit to a delivery tank. The concentrate may then be conveyed from the first module to a plurality of modules that are serially connected to each other. Each of the modules has an outlet that is connected by an intermediate conduit to an inlet of the adjacent module for the passage of the solution therethrough. The permeate stream exits from each of the modules and is collectively conveyed to the delivery tank. The concentrate is directed through the modules to provide a stronger concentration of the tartrate in the solution. The concentrate is then conveyed to a crystallizer where tartrate crystals are formed. Thereafter, the tartrate crystals are filtered from the tartarous beverage and the tartarous beverage is conducted tartrate-free to the delivery tank to be admixed with said permeate to form a tartrate-free beverage.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 112 words
A method for removing tartrate from a tartarous beverage comprising, introducing said tartarous beverage under pressure into a module for reverse osmosis having a semipermeable membrane, separating said tartarous beverage by reverse osmosis into a permeate portion of tartrate-free beverage and a concentrate portion containing a solution of said beverage and tartrate, passing said permeate portion from said module to a recovery container, withdrawing said concentrate portion from said module, crystallizing tartrate crystals in said withdrawn concentrate portion, filtering said tartrate crystals from said beverage in said concentrate portion, and admixing said filtered beverage in said concentrate portion with said permeate portion in said recovery container to thus form a tartrate-free beverage.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 122 words
A method for removing tartrate from a tartarous beverage as set forth in claim 1 wherein said reverse osmosis occurs in a plurality of steps by, passing said tartarous beverage through a plurality of modules connected in series and each having a semipermeable membrane, separating said tartarous beverage into a permeate portion of tartrate-free beverage and a concentrate portion containing a solution of said beverage and tartrate in each of said modules, passing said permeate portion from each of said modules to said recovery container, and passing said concentrate portion containing said solution to a subsequent module for separating said solution into an additional permeate portion of tartrate-free beverage and a further concentrate portion containing said solution of a beverage and tartrate.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 48 words
A method for removing tartrate from a tartarous beverage as set forth in claim 1 which includes, recycling a portion of said concentrate portion, prior to said withdrawing and crystallizing, for further separation into a permeate portion of tartrate-free beverage and a solution of a beverage and tartrate.
