Abstract

Abstract Method for determining, non-destructively, degradation of certain physicalroperties of textile materials wherein a sample of the textile material is held under tension and caused to ring to generate acoustic signals and the frequency of the acoustic signal is compared with the frequency generated from a control of the same material, with any significant difference in frequency of response of the sample as compared with the control indicating a change in physical property.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 113 words
A non-destructive test method for detecting degradation of physical properties in textile materials which comprises: a. placing a fixed length of a test sample of a textile material selected from the group consisting of fibers, yarns and fabrics, under tension, b. impacting said tensioned textile material to cause it to ring in its free or resonant mode generating acoustic signals. c. detecting the generated acoustic signals, d. determining the frequency of the acoustic signals, and e. comparing said frequency with the frequency obtained under identical conditions of a non-degraded control of the same textile material, with any deviation from the frequency of the control signifying degradation of physical properties in the test material.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 113 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
A non-destructive test method according to claim 1 wherein the textile material is a fiber.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 17 words
A non-destructive test method according to claim 2 wherein the fiber is tensioned along the fiber axis.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
A non-destructive test method according to claim 1 wherein the textile material is a yarn.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
A non-destructive test method according to claim 4 wherein the yarn is tensioned along the yarn axis.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 16 words
A non-destructive test method according to claim 1 wherein the textile material is a woven fabric.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 18 words
A non-destructive test method according to claim 6 wherein the fabric is tensioned along one of its axes.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 23 words
A non-destructive test method according to claim 7 wherein the stress applied to the tensioned fabric is about 1.25 lbs. per inch width.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 17 words
A non-destructive test method according to claim 1 wherein the acoustic signals are detected by a microphone.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 32 words
A non-destructive test method according to claim 1 wherein degradation in textile materials refers to a loss of tensile strength and wherein the acoustic signals are detected by an acoustic sensing device.
