A polymer composition of the class consisting of chlorinated polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride which polymer has a chlorine content of 10 to 75 per cent and is compounded with 1 to 25 parts of zinc borate (2ZnO.3B 2 O 3 . 3.5 H 2 O) and 6 to 150 parts of Al 2 O 3 .3H 2 O which act synergistically as a smoke suppressant when the polymer composition is burned.
