A method for making a bearing which comprises the steps of: depositing onto a steel substrate a powder mixture of iron and a material taken from the group consisting of iron sulfide, copper sulfide, tin sulfide and sulfur, sintering said mixture whereby a porous matrix is formed which is bonded to said substrate and filling the pores of said matrix with babbitt.
