A method for producing high molecular weight derivatives containing at least a recurring unit of the formula: ##SPC8## wherein R means an organic residue except for 2,4-dinitrophenyl radical which comprises reacting homopolymers or copolymers of vinyl pyridine including at least a structural unit ##SPC9## in its backbone or side chain with an amino-containing organic compound represented by the general formula: RNH 2 wherein R has the meaning defined above in the presence of a liquid reaction medium under neutral to alkaline conditions.
