Abstract

Abstract An electrophoretic migration imaging process, apparatus, and materials useful therein are disclosed. Electrically photosensitive particles, at least some of which bear a positive polarity electrostatic charge, are disposed between two spaced electrodes. Imaging is accomplished by A. disposing the electrically photosensitive particles between the spaced electrodes, and B. substantially simultaneously 1. establishing a potential difference between said electrodes to create an electric field such that at least a portion of the positive polarity electrically photosensitive particles move into electrical contact with the layer of dark charge exchange material, and Imagewise exposing the electrically photosensitive particles to activating radiation such that at least a portion of the exposed, positive polarity particles are immobilized at the surface of the layer of dark charge exchange material and at least a portion of the unexposed, positive polarity particles undergo a net change in charge polarity upon electrical contact with the layer of dark charge exchange material and are repelled therefrom.

Claim 47
Dependent Claim 329 words
A photoimmobilized electrophoretic recording process which comprises: a. provising a liquid imaging suspension comprising an electrically insulating carrier liquid and greater than about 0.01 weight percent of electricaly photosensitive particles, at least some of said particles exhibiting a positive polarity electrostatic charge, said particles comprising a mixture of at least two differently colored particles, each of which are primarily responsive to visible radiation of a different wavelength, b. disposing said suspension between two spaced electrodes, 1. one of said electrodes having on the surface thereof adjacent to said suspension a uniform layer comprising a solid solution of binder and an amount of a dark charge exchange material sufficient to provide a net change in charge polarity of at least a portion of said positive polarity particles upon electrical contact therewith in the presence of said field and in the absence of visible radiation, said dark charge exchange material (i) having at least two aromatic rings and (ii) possessing at least two substituents bonded to an aromatic ring thereof which are strong electron withdrawing groups selected from the group consisting of cyano groups, dicyanoalkylene groups, and nitro groups, and the other of said electrodes having on the surface thereof adjacent to said suspension a blocking layer, and 2. one of said electrodes being at least partially transparent to visible radiation, c. substantially simultaneously 1. establishing a potential difference between said electrodes to create said field such that at a portion of said positive polarity particles move into electrical contact with said layer of dark charge exchange material and 2. imagewise exposing said particles to visible radiation such that at least a portion of the exposed, positive polarity particles are immobilized at the surface of said layer of dark charge exchange material and at least a portion of the unexposed, positive polarity particles, upon electrical contact with the layer of dark charge exchange material, undergo a net change in charge polarity and are repelled therefrom, whereby a multicolor image is formed.
