Abstract

Abstract Method and apparatus for machining an end surface for a housing for a slant axis rotary mechanism having a slant angle of ⊖ and a rotor to shaft to housing timing ratio of S R /S S S H . The method includes the steps of providing a grinding tool within a fixed predetermined area, rotating a housing having an end surface to be machined about its central axis at a first rate of rotation R 1 with the end surface engaged by the tool, and simultaneously rotating the housing about a second axis intersecting the central axis at an angle ⊖ and at a second rate of rotation R 2 . The rates of rotation are chosen according to the following relations: R 1 = n(S H - S R ), and R 2 = n(S S - S R ). n Is an arbitrarily selected average angular velocity component. The disclosed apparatus performs the above method.
