Abstract
Abstract An asphaltene-containing oil hydrodesulfurization process employing a downstream catalyst and an upstream catalyst in a reactor. The downstream catalyst comprises supported Group VI and Group VIII metals together with a promoting amount of Group IV-B metal. The upstream catalyst comprises Group VI and Group VIII metals without promotion with Group IV-B metal.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
125 words
A process for the desulfurization of an asphaltene-containing feed oil containing sulfur and metals at a hydrogen pressure between 1,000 and 5,000 psig and a temperature between 600° and 900°F., comprising passing said oil together with hydrogen downwardly through a hydrodesulfurization reactor containing an upstream catalyst bed and a downstream catalyst bed, said downstream catalyst bed comprising Group VI and Group VIII metals together with a promoting amount of Group IV-B metal impregnated on a non-cracking support, said promoting amount being between 1 to 10 weight percent based on the total weight of said catalyst, said upstream catalyst bed comprising Group VI and Group VIII metals on a non-cracking support without said promoting amount of Group IV-B metal and removing desulfurized oil from said reactor.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
17 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said upstream catalyst comprises most of the catalyst in the reactor.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
23 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the promoting amount of Group IV-B metal comprises 2.5 to 8 weight percent of the downstream catalyst.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
12 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said Group IV-B metal is titanium.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
23 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the Group VI and Group VIII metals in the upstream and downstream catalysts comprise nickel and molybdenum.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
23 words
The process of claim 1 wherein most of the sulfur and metals contained in the feed oil is removed by said upstream catalyst.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
23 words
The process of claim 1 wherein of the total oil product, at least 70 percent boils above the IBP of the feed oil.
