Abstract
Abstract Acids containing 2n+1 carbon atoms and esters containing [(2n+1) + n'] carbon atoms are produced, respectively, by the reaction of olefins containing n carbon atoms with carbon monoxide and water or alcohols containing n' carbon atoms in the presence of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. The carbon number of esters from diols is given by [2(2n+1) + n'] wherein n' represents the carbon number of the diol.
