Abstract
Abstract The invention is a method for preparing hydrogen sulfide by reacting a gas mixture containing carbon monoxide with sulfur to provide a gas mixture containing carbonyl sulfide and reacting the gas mixture containing carbonyl sulfide with water in the vapor phase to provide a gas mixture containing hydrogen sulfide. The process is preferrably operated continuously. The water can be present in the step in which the carbon monoxide is reacted with the sulfur.

Independent Claim
148 words
A process for preparing hydrogen sulfide which comprises: a. providing a gas mixture containing carbon monoxide; b. heating said gas mixture to a temperature above about 500°F. by direct heat exchange with a heated material whereby the heated material is cooled in a first zone; c. introducing sulfur into the gas mixture and reacting the gas mixture with the sulfur at a temperature between about 500° and 1300°F. to form a gas mixture containing carbonyl sulfide in a second zone; d. reacting the gas mixture containing carbonyl sulfide with water, in the vapor phase, at a temperature between about 400°F. and about 1300°F. to form a reacted gas mixture containing hydrogen sulfide in a third zone; and e. cooling said reacted gas mixture by direct heat exchange with a cooled material whereby said cooled material is heated to be used as the heated material in said first zone.
