Abstract
Abstract Fluorescent material for the optical frequency conversion of near infrared radiation from 0.85 to 1.06 μm into visible radiation. The constituents of the material are (i) vitrifying fluorides of lead, beryllium and magnesium, (ii) devitrifying and activating fluoride of ytterbium and (iii) doping fluoride of erbium for a green and red response and doping fluoride of thulium for a blue response. The content of ytterbium fluoride controls the form of the material, either glassy ceramic or polycristalline. Proper preparation conditions allow to prepare either a glass material or a ceramic material.

Independent Claim
192 words
A method for preparing fluorescent material for optical conversion of near infrared from 0.85 to 1.06 millimicrons into visible radiation comprising the steps of: a. mixing at room temperature finely divided solid fluorides of lead, magnesium, beryllium, as vitrifying agents with yetterbium fluoride, which has devitrifying properties and with a powdered doping agent selected from the group consisting of erbium fluoride for red and green at a concentration of 6 × 10 20 to 24 × 10 20 atoms per cm 3 and thulium fluoride for blue in a concentration of 1.5 × 10 20 atoms per cm 3 , the weight percentages being lead fluoride 20 - 45%
beryllium fluoride
20 - 40%
magnesium fluoride
5 - 20%
ytterbium fluoride
balance to 100% except for doping amounts; b. heating the mixture to about 1200°C to convert the mixture to the molten state in a time period of up to about 6 minutes; c. cooling the molten mixture at ambient or room temperature from 1200°C to about 500°C in a still molten condition; and d. casting the cooled molten mixture in a mold to provide the solidified material in predetermined envelope form.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
41 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said mixture is cast into a mold which is preheated to 100°C and wherein said cooled molten mixture solidifies to form a glass, said solidification taking place at a temperature of about 100°C.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
41 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said mixture is cast into a mold which is preheated to 250°C and wherein said cooled molten mixture solidifies to form a glass, said solidification taking place at a temperature of about 250°C.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
79 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said mold into which said molten mixture is cast is first preheated to 250°C before casting and then permitted to cool to 100°C during solidification whereby the glass envelope is formed about the periphery of the casting at a temperature of 100°C and the inner portion of the mold is maintained at a temperature higher than 100°C and closer to 250°C to thereby provide a ceramic center in the glass envelope.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
82 words
A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein said mold is provided with lenticular cavities whereby the casting in the mold is obtained in lenticular form, and wherein the radius of curvature of each of said lenticular cavities is selected so that the refractive index of the glass having a value of about 1.37 permits infrared radiation to be focused by the lenticular portions of said casting, and the focussed infrared radiation is directed into the ceramic portion of the lenticular element.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
20 words
A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said mold is rectangular and provides a glass casting having parallel faces.
