Abstract
Abstract Methods are set forth for the treatment of seafood whereby toxic heavy metal ions, especially mercury ions, are removed from the seafood making the same safe for consumption. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the method comprises washing the seafood with an organic sulphur complexing agent for heavy metal ions and heating the seafood at a temperature and for a time sufficient to volatilize the heavy metal ions therefrom.
