Abstract

Abstract A surgical drape of the invention has a main sheet with a cuff at the top end thereof. The cuff is secured to the upper surface of the main sheet along lines of attachment that are placed inwardly a substantial distance from the side edges of the main sheet to provide a hand receiving pocket in the drape. A strip of adhesive is secured to the lower surface of the main sheet near the top edge of the drape and is protected, prior to use of the drape, by a removably adhered release sheet. The pocket in the drape receives the hands of a nurse who may easily and quickly secure the drape to the desired part of the patient's body by bringing the adhesive into contact with the patient and running her fingers back and forth over the adhesive strip lying under the pocket. The drape is particularly suited for application to the patient's head, especially the forehead, and hence is of particular utility in surgery involving the eyes, ears, nose or throat. The drape is folded longitudinally and transversely into a compact unit which can be easily and quickly unfolded and applied to the patient. In its folded form, the drape comprises two outwardly facing major surfaces on each of which is located a portion of the hand receiving pocket. The adhesive strip also faces outwardly on the completely folded drape. Thus the release sheet may be conveniently removed from the adhesive, and the hands inserted into the pocket portions, before the drape is unfolded from its folded form and applied to the patient.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 178 words
A surgical drape comprising: a. a main sheet of flexible, drapable material, said main sheet having an upper surface, a lower surface, a top edge, an upper portion adjacent said top edge, a bottom edge, and opposed side edges; b. a cuff overlying the upper surface of said upper portion of said main sheet, said cuff having a top edge, a bottom edge, and opposed side edges, said cuff being integral with said main sheet along the respective top edges of said cuff and said main sheet, said cuff being further secured to the upper surface of said main sheet along generally longitudinally extending lines of attachment which are spaced inwardly a substantial distance from the side edges of said main sheet, whereby, after said cuff has been attached to said main sheet along said lines of attachment, a hand receiving pocket is provided in said drape; and c. a strip of adhesive for removably adhering the drape to the body of a patient, said strip of adhesive being secured to the lower surface of said main sheet.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 178 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 42 words
A surgical drape according to claim 1 wherein the upper portion of said main sheet comprises a top part and a lower part and said strip of adhesive is secured to the lower surface of said upper portion of the main sheet.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 27 words
A surgical drape according to claim 2 wherein said strip of adhesive is long enough to extend substantially from one side of said pocket to the other.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
A surgical drape according to claim 1 wherein said adhesive strip is protected prior to use of the drape by a first piece of removably adhered release sheet.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 45 words
A surgical drape according to claim 4 wherein a second piece of removably adhered release sheet is adhered to an end portion of said adhesive strip, said second piece of release sheet being at least partially covered by an end of said first release covering.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 16 words
A surgical drape according to claim 1 wherein said cuff has a reinforcing panel secured thereto.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 23 words
A surgical drape according to claim 6 wherein said reinforcing panel is secured to a portion of the upper surface to said cuff.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
A surgical drape according to claim 7 wherein said reinforcing panel comprises a liquid impervious layer having a liquid absorbent upper surface.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 27 words
A surgical drape according to claim 8 wherein said reinforcing panel is of sufficient size to cover the upper surface of the pocket formed in the drape.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 53 words
A surgical drape according to claim 9 wherein said reinforcing panel is folded over the upper edge of the drape and is secured to the bottom surface of said main sheet, said strip of adhesive secured to the lower surface of said main sheet being uncovered by said part of said reinforcing panel.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 22 words
A surgical drape according to claim 1 wherein said pocket is generally symmetrically located between the side edges of the main sheet.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 26 words
A surgical drape according to claim 10 wherein the width of said pocket is from about 1/3 to about 2/3 of the width of said drape.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 22 words
A surgical drape according to claim 1 wherein said drape has been folded, sterilized, and packaged in said folded and sterilized condition.
