A method of inhibiting the growth of weeds which comprises treating the soil before emergence of the weeds or the growing weeds themselves with a herbicidal amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of ##SPC16## the alkali metal and the mono-, di- and trialkylamine salts thereof wherein each alkyl group has from 1 to 12 carbon atoms; R being selected from the group consisting of alkyl having from 3 to 5 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl having from 3 to 5 carbon atoms and CF 2 R 1 wherein R 1 is selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, H and --CLMN wherein L, M and N are each selected from the group consisting of H, F and Cl; X being selected from the group consisting of H, Cl, Br and alkyl having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and Y and Z each being selected from the group consisting of H and CH 3 .
