Method of suppressing seborrhoea whereby there is applied to the affected area a composition containing as active principle d,l-carnitine chloride or l-carnitine chloride or a mixture of these two substances, the said active principle corresponding to the formula: ##EQU2## the amount of d,l-carnitine chloride applied being 0.1 mg. to 0.8 mg. per square centimeter and the amount of l-carnitine chloride applied being 0.05 mg. to 0.4 mg. per square centimeter.
